Minutes of CFAS Board Meeting


September 17, 2003


Board Members present were:


Frank Sperl
Walt Hamler
Jean Bassick
Pat Weeks

Dave Furrow
Joseph Strait
Paul Kronenwetter


Frank Sperl called the August Board Meeting to order at 19:43. Dan’s Restaurant was closed for renovations so the meeting was moved to Jerry’s Italian Restaurant.


Secretary’s Report: It was moved and seconded to accept the Secretary’s report for the August 20, 2003 board Meeting. The motion was unanimously approved.


Treasurer’s Report: Larry Lurie summarized the Treasurers’ report for August and the board approved the report.


Membership: The following members were approved by the board this month:

Robert Nelson
George Dubrasky
Mark Schulman
Paul Crate
Hunter Jackson
Michael Liquori
Karen Boutather


Education: Walt informed the members that all loaner scopes were lent out.


DSAC: No report


BMAL: David Furrow requested further info on the upcoming elections. A preliminary slate for nominated officers was drawn up as follows:


President: Ray Jones

Vice President: Pat Weeks

Treasurer: Alan Hoffberg

Secretary: Dave Furrow


The board also nominated Frank Sperl to step in as the new BMAL to replace Dave Furrow.


OSC: Larry mentioned that OSC still has plans for a full CFAS exhibition which would encompass astrophotography from various CFAS members.


The September meeting with Bruce Melnick was very successful with 65 people in attendance.

The board requested Pat’s assistance in writing a letter to thank Mr. Melnick for his time and forward it on to Steve Neal to send out.


Programs: Robert Goss will be the speaker in October to discuss the latest Mars Exploration Rover Mission.


Jean Bassick will provide refreshments for that meeting.


Observing: The board discussed the overall success of the Mars Watch program the week of August 27th.


In Ray’s absence the following personnel volunteered to run the observing sites:


Walt Hamler: Harmony - September 19
Dave Furrow: Harmony - September 26
Todd Parker: Star Range - September 27


The Astrofest agenda was further discussed and volunteers to assist with set up were to begin reporting at 1600 on Friday the 24th


  1. Site Prep: Ray Jones, Oct 24 16:00

  2. Registration Desk: Jean Bassick, Oct 24 16:00-18:00

  3. Assist with Barbecue set-up: Dave Furrow, Oct 25

  4. Give astronomy presentation: Steve Neal, Oct 24 & Oct 25 Various

  5. Door Prizes: Larry Lurie, Oct 25 16:00

  6. Swap Table: Frank Sperl

  7. Site Clean-up: Ray Jones, Oct 26 16:00


Raffle tickets were also discussed. The board recommended that one raffle ticket be passed out to every CFAS member and 1 ticket be passed out to every paying adult.


Volunteers are still needed for programs & presentations and details should be hammered out at the next board meeting on October 15th.


Joe discussed a possible Saturday afternoon children’s program. The Sentinel has shown some interested in following up on an astronomy program for the kids.
