  1. President's Call to order. Welcoming remarks.

Meeting was called to order at 7:01pm


  1. Secretary's Report

Request was made for comments and changes to the July board meeting minutes. No additional changes were suggested. Walt moved to accept the minutes, David seconded. The minutes were approved unanimously.


  1. Treasurer's Report

Alan explained the budget sheet that was handed out, and the status of CFAS funds.

  1. Agenda Items

  1. Report on Hydrogen Alpha filter telescope.(Walt)
    Ray made a recommendation to purchase the scope at the last meeting. After the discussion of the CFAS finances and the money that can be spent, it was decided to wait until next year to buy the scope.

  2. Robinson Observatory status.
    The observatory is in full working order, except for the computer which doesn’t want to talk to The Sky software now.

  3. Astronomy course.

Ray informed the board that 16 had signed up and 15 showed up for theAugust 13th session. He is pleased by the turnout.

  1. Volusion County Star Party Request.

Walt told the board that Bonnei Cary (sp?) from Volusia County Land Acqusition group had discussed having CFAS come to the Wiregrass Wildlife Preserve, which is on State Road 415 outside of Osteen. Ray did some research online and it appears as though this site has the same level of dark skies as Chiefland. Walt will talk to her some more to see when this would be scheduled.

  1. Review UCF astronomy scholarship plaques.

There will be a plaque for Erin Langsdorf, and one for CFAS. The CFAS version will have space for each scholarship winner’s name and year they won. It will reside in the Robinson Observatory.

f Mars Observing Week

Opposition is in October, but Mars will be at its closest Nov 7, which will coincide with the Chiefland Star Party. CFAS will be holding viewing at Robinson the week of October 24th.


SCC will be holding a combination Haloween / Mars event. Handing out Mars candy bars, etc. Event is planned for Oct 29th, a Saturday.

Frank Gutoswki is not present.

  • September: (SCC)

  • A presentation will be created on observing Mars presented by Tom Chitty

  • A presentation by Paul Gardner on his research this past summer at JPL.


  1. DSAC/Library

  • Derek Demeter was nominated for, and approved as the new chairman of DSAC. Alan moved to accept Derek, Tony seconded it. All in favor of approval.


  1. Publicity

  • The next anticipated event is Mars, and Tony will start gearing up for that.


  1. Orlando Science Center

  • No report.


  1. Board Members at Large

  • CFAS elections are coming up, and there will be 5 positions available.


  1. Observing

  • Volsuia County event mentioned above.

  • English Estates Elementary wants us back in February

  • Greg at Harmony would like to schedule us to be out one night as part of a Harmony Stroll among nature event October 1st mentioned.


  1. Robinson

  • Package for complete rebuild submitted by Paul Gardner. No other data available.

  • Visitor night starts in September.


  1. Astrolog Editor

  • Deadline for next issue is September 10th.


  1. Scientific Committee

  • No report


  1. NASA Night Sky Network

  • No discussion.


  1. Webmaster

  • No report.

Acting secretary Tom Chitty lost his notes form this point on, I am sorry to say. I have looked for them, and been completely unable to find them. Guess I won’t be asked to do this again!
