CFAS Monthly Board Meeting Minutes

  1. President's Call to order. Welcoming remarks.

The meeting was called to order at 7:16pm.

  1. Secretary's Report

Paul made a request for comments and changes to the February board meeting minutes. Francisco made a motion to approve the minutes as distributed by email. Walt seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously.

  1. Treasurer's Report

Alan briefly reviewed the treasurer's report with the board. Tony moved to approved treasurer report, Beeler seconded. The report was accepted unanimously.

  1. Agenda Items

    1. Astrofest

      1. We managed to break even this year.

      2. Alan recommended to Beeler that the attestations on the yahoo group be collected and published in the next astrolog.

      3. Alan also reminded the board of the policy on refunds for Astrofest.

      4. Reservations at KPP for next year's Astrofest will be discussed at the next meeting.

      5. The policy for next year's Astrofest at KPP must include the prohibition of placing any type of tent in the observation area.

      6. The board also agreed to strictly enforce the following: registration must be completed by the deadline. The fees must be received and confirmed before a family is considered registered for Astrofest.

    2. CAV Memorial Star Party

      1. Walt mentioned the CAV memorial star party will be held in April to remember Billy Dodd, for Chiefland members only. He encourages any CAV members in CFAS to attend this star party.

Beeler made a motion to approve the above new members. Tom seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

    1. Programs

      1. The April meeting will be at the SCC Planetarium. The program will be on Radio Astronomy by Laurent Pellerin or Black Holes presented by Tony.

      2. May's program at the Orlando Science Center will probably be presented by Barbara Harris on Photometry.

      3. June's program will be presented by Tony on the Sun.

    1. DSAC/Library

      1. Alan reviewed an email from Derek Demeter. Derek has a number of images from the overflight of the area. He also has ideas for light shields that may be applied to the new lighting being installed at or near a local airport.

    1. Publicity

      1. Astronomy day is April 21st.

        1. Walt will place a note on the Yahoo group to solicit volunteers for both Orlando Science Center and SCC Planetarium.

        2. The board discussed holding an event, sponsored by CFAS, at one of the library locations. We've missed the library-sponsored advertising, but that may not be much of an issue. Alan suggested sending information to the elementary and middle schools mentioning the event.

    1. Astrolog Editor

      1. Beeler is almost ready to send this edition to the printers. He has pictures from Astrofest that he'll be including.

    1. Scientific Committee

      1. Tom Dazey reported that, from the 21 surveys returned so far, we have a significant number of people interested in astro-photography and radio astronomy. Suggestions from respondents included extra-solar planet searching and asteroid searches.

      2. Tom asked if we could locate a facility which will accommodate lectures and seminars on some of these topics. The board suggested these topics and seminars be added to the monthly meetings. Hands-on sessions could be held during the star party gatherings during the year.

      3. Tom will contact the University of Florida regarding the radio astronomy program they have

    1. NASA Night Sky Network

      1. The next NNSN teleconference will be held on March 27th on the Intergalatic Medium at 9pm. Walt will forward the message to the Yahoo group.

    1. Webmaster

      1. Tom D. mentioned there is a lot of information from past years.

  1. Old Business

    1. No old business was discussed.

  1. New Business

    1. Beeler asked if CFAS could present Celestial Navigation to a group of sailboaters. Walt suggested Phil Reed as a contact.

  1. Motion to Adjourn

    1. Tom D. motioned to adjourn the meeting, Walt seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:32pm.
