CFAS/Orlando Science Center Partnership

Presently CFAS and OSC have established a formal agreement to allow both organizations to work together on astronomy related efforts. However you can become a OSC volunteer independent of this agreement. The process is very easy.
In order to make it easier for CFAS members, OSC will schedule a special orientation meeting at a convenient agreed upon time. Volunteer opportunities are not limited to just the Observatory or Astronomy related functions. Opportunities exist in all areas such as the exhibit shop, administration, Nature Works, etc.
The Orientation runs about 3 hours and will cover all the basics that every OSC volunteer needs to know. All required paper work is filled out, and once a background check has been completed, the person is then able to begin work as a volunteer. If the area where a volunteer will be working requires additional training, it will be provided later by the individual department.
Eric Hoin trains all our Observatory volunteers, so if there are any questions about working in the Observatory, just ask Eric at ehoin@harcourtbrace.com.
Access to the OSC refractor telescope in the Crosby Observatory is also possible. The first requirement will be that you be an Observatory Volunteer. Those wishing to use the Refractor will be trained by Eric during the course of the normal Observatory training. The issue of access during times outside normal OSC building hours has not been completely resolved. Several possibilities are being looked at, and to some degree the solution will be dependent on how many CFAS members are wanting access outside of normal building hours. It is not a matter of will there be access, rather how best to have that access.
If you have other questions concerning being a volunteer at OSC. You can reach the Volunteer office during normal business hours at 407-514-2000. CFAS members who are interested in becoming OSC volunteers are asked to contact CFAS member, Larry Lurie who is chairman of the CFAS OSC Committee.

The Crosby observatory, located on top of the Orlando Science center, houses a 10 inch Byers refractor. This instrument has many accessories including a hydrogen alpha filter that allows for spectacular views of the sun and its prominences. The telescope also offers remarkable viewing of the moon and the planets.
